The city as a sound stage – An expression of activity and vividness that can be heard, and its artistic interpretation are in the spotlight of the second event.

The work Pierdrie (2012) by Marco Douma (visuals), Roel Meelkop (sound) and Rutger Zuydervelt (sound) is an audio-video-live-act and, as the title ‘Pier 3’ suggests, a work inspired by the industrial ‘Waalhaven’ in Rotterdam. Live image and sound material collected from manual and mechanical machinery noises of the harbour at night - becomes a fascinating, woven, audio-visual tapestry. The recordings are specifically taken from a distance to have the image and sound range appear softly and devoid of hardness. They convey an underlying, mysterious atmosphere.
Apart from the live-act, for us, this work allegorically represents all the cultural connections and exchanges between Basel and Rotterdam, linked by the Rhine. (Images: Video-Stills)

The Installation The Spatial Aural Exciter (2012) by Samy Kramer consists of a network of electronic acoustics, which offer the possibility to explore sound events of density and expand into time and space.
The piece is inspired by an immense variety of sound impressions from every day experiences and can transform its structure like an urban acoustic network. ‘The way we hear is a part of how we see the world’.

The project Urban Audio by Florian Tuercke is directly inspired by a public sound background with the intention to research its compositional potential. He creates specific transformers and instruments to lure musical melodies from that urban sound. Common street noise can thus turn into pleasant partitures.

The audio-light installation (2012) by Christine Camenisch & Johannes Vetsch is a subtle intervention of a site-specific event. A window of the Augustinergasse 17 is brightly illuminated and then becomes dimmed; its brightness becomes less or increases, like a calm breathing.
The work is continuous and constantly present, yet of vast contrast in its perception depending on the light and the surroundings. During daytime, the subtle sound of the audio part of the installation will draw the attention of passing people. A special moment will occur when the city centre - highly frequented on weekends until about 11pm – transforms and gains its nightly peace. It is the moment when the mysterious and mystical atmosphere of the light installation will become most obvious.
We see the work as a kind of membrane between the private and the public, of dreams between day and night.

The Objet trouvé Fridolin (sound installation, 2012) by Andreas Frick evolved during a residency in Shanghai. The work is based on the Chinese tradition of keeping crickets as a pet. Their melodic chirping delights many and weaves into the urban sound background of metropolitan China on a natural acoustic level. The sale of crickets in ornate boxes are touted in every corner of the city.
The sound of the absent pet can now be heard from a wooden box that integrates a hidden amplifier, which can be found hanging on the wall as an Objet trouvé. As a work of art, it acquires a kind of tamagotchi cult status through its title Fridolin and thus almost becomes an iconic relict.
